Question: How do I start building an E-commerce website from scratch?

When you start a business you know nothing. In fact you know less then nothing about your target market since you have your assumptions which might take you in the wrong direction. And there are lots of technology-savvy advisors selling you their technology taking your time which you should spend on your business.

So the only sound advice you should take is:

  1. START SMALL
  2. TEST YOUR MARKET BY SELLING YOUR PRODUCT
  3. CHOOSE THE RIGHT TOOLS THAT LET YOU SELL.

DO NOT start big with a lot of tools and technology you don’t understand taking a lot of your time which you should spend servicing your customers and selling your product. And learning how to increase you sales. That is the point of the first stage of your business development – to learn as much as you can while spending very little.

I suggest two steps which let you focus on sales instead of technology:

  • Shopify for your initial, easy to perform, low-customization, micro-business implementations. Relatively short time to launch, not a lot of effort that goes into it. Downside: higher cost per transaction sometimes going into double digits which doesn’t hurt you when you don’t have a lot of customers.
  • SpreeCommerce for the expansion stage of your business when you know what you want and have several customization requirements. Besides you need transaction costs to go down into single digits due to increasing sales (and costs) – you can count on our (Ruby on Rails & Spree Commerce Developers) expert advice in that area

Good luck!
